White gold gives diamond rings a bright, neutral appearance that works with classic and modern designs. It is especially popular for pavé rings because the light-colored metal blends visually with the small diamonds, creating a continuous field of sparkle.
This archived N.J. Diamonds design features 0.70 total carats of SI-clarity diamonds pavé-set in 14K white gold. Its details offer a useful example of what to consider when choosing, wearing, and maintaining a white-gold diamond ring.
What is white gold?
Pure gold is naturally yellow. White gold is created by mixing gold with other metals to produce a lighter-colored alloy. Karat describes the proportion of gold in that alloy: 14K and 18K are common choices for fine jewelry.
Many white-gold rings are finished with rhodium, a bright white metal applied as a thin surface coating. Rhodium creates a crisp, reflective appearance, but it is not permanent. Normal wear gradually reveals the slightly warmer color of the white-gold alloy beneath it.

How pavé diamond settings create sparkle
In a pavé setting, rows of small diamonds are held with tiny beads or prongs of metal. When the stones are closely spaced and aligned, less metal is visible from the top, and the surface appears covered in diamonds.
Pavé can be used across part of a band, around a halo, or as an accent within a larger design. The quality of the result depends on consistent stone size, careful spacing, secure setting, and enough supporting metal beneath the diamonds.
What SI clarity means for small diamonds
SI means “slightly included” within the clarity grading scale. The grade describes inclusions observed under standardized examination, but it does not guarantee that every SI diamond will look identical or that all inclusions are invisible without magnification.
Small pavé diamonds are evaluated as part of the overall design. Matching color, brightness, size, and secure setting can matter more visually than chasing very high clarity grades in every tiny stone. For larger diamonds, evaluate clarity individually and consider the location and visibility of inclusions.

Is a pavé ring right for everyday wear?
Pavé rings can be worn regularly, but they need appropriate care. The small stones and fine metalwork may be vulnerable to hard impacts, bending, or repeated contact with another ring. A very thin pavé band may also have less room for future sizing adjustments.
- Remove the ring before heavy work, exercise, gardening, or activities that may strike the band.
- Avoid forcing the ring over a swollen knuckle or bending it out of round.
- Do not use a brush aggressively around small stones.
- Have the ring inspected if a stone moves, the band bends, or the setting catches fabric.
- Check how another ring contacts the pavé area when the pieces are worn together.
Rhodium plating and routine maintenance
How often a ring needs rhodium plating varies with wear, skin chemistry, cleaning habits, and the thickness of the original finish. Some people notice color change first on the bottom of the band and along raised edges.
Before refinishing, a jeweler should inspect the prongs, pavé beads, stones, and band. Polishing and plating make the ring look brighter, but they do not correct structural wear unless the damaged areas are repaired.
Can a pavé ring be resized?
Possibly, but the answer depends on how far the diamonds extend around the band, the amount of metal available, the design, and the size change required. Resizing can alter the curve of the band and affect tension around small stones. An in-person inspection is necessary before recommending the work.
