Check the height and shape of both rings, whether they sit flush, and whether exposed diamonds or prongs rub against the engagement-ring setting. A straight band works with many rings, while a curved, contoured, or notched band may be needed around a low-set center stone or decorative basket.

Choose a setting style

Prong and shared-prong

Prongs expose more of each diamond and can create a bright, airy appearance. Shared-prong settings use fewer visible prongs between neighboring stones, but the exposed edges should be checked carefully against an engagement ring.

Channel setting

Diamonds sit between two metal walls, producing a smooth outline with no prongs between the stones. Channel-set bands are popular for active wear, although damaged channel walls require professional attention.

Bezel and pavé

Bezel settings surround all or part of each diamond with metal for added edge protection. Pavé settings use small diamonds for a fine field of sparkle and should be inspected periodically for worn beads or loose stones.

Full eternity or partial eternity?

A full eternity band carries diamonds around the entire ring. It offers continuous sparkle but is difficult—and sometimes impossible—to resize. A half- or three-quarter-eternity band leaves plain metal underneath, which can improve comfort, simplify maintenance, and preserve more sizing flexibility. Decide which tradeoff suits your long-term needs before the ring is made.

Metal and color

White gold and platinum create a bright backdrop, while yellow or rose gold adds visible warmth and contrast. Matching the engagement ring is traditional, but mixing metals can look intentional when the proportions and finish are balanced. Platinum and gold wear differently, so consider how two neighboring rings will contact each other over time.

Natural and lab-grown diamonds

Wedding bands can be made with natural or lab-grown diamonds. Both are real diamonds with the same fundamental material properties, but they have different origins and market considerations. Ask for clear disclosure and make sure the stone origin is recorded on the sales paperwork.

Matching quality matters

A well-made band uses diamonds that appear consistent in outline, size, color, and brilliance. Matching becomes especially important with larger stones or elongated shapes. Carat weight describes weight—not visible size—so total carat weight alone does not tell you how the finished band will look.
