Jewelry warranties and service agreements can protect your purchase, but only when you understand their requirements. Before having a ring cleaned, sized, repaired, or altered—or having a watch battery replaced—read the paperwork that came with the item and ask the original seller or manufacturer how outside service may affect coverage.
Terms vary widely. A service performed by another jeweler does not automatically cancel every warranty, but some agreements limit who may open, alter, repair, or maintain the item. Written terms—not assumptions—determine what is covered.
Warranty, service plan, and insurance are different
- Manufacturer or store warranty: May cover certain defects in materials or workmanship for a stated period.
- Service agreement or care plan: May include inspections, cleaning, polishing, sizing, prong work, or other maintenance under specific conditions.
- Jewelry insurance: May provide protection for risks such as theft, loss, or accidental damage, depending on the policy.
One does not necessarily replace another. For example, a warranty may address a manufacturing issue but exclude loss, normal wear, or accidental damage. Review each document separately and keep copies with your receipt and appraisal.
Look for required inspections and maintenance
Some plans require periodic professional inspections. Missing an inspection or failing to keep proof of service may affect a later claim. Check whether the agreement specifies:
- How often the jewelry must be inspected
- Who is authorized to perform the inspection
- Whether cleaning or maintenance records must be retained
- Which services are included and which require payment
- What happens if a recommended repair is declined
Have loose stones, worn prongs, cracked metal, or a damaged clasp addressed promptly. Continuing to wear damaged jewelry can make the problem worse and may complicate a claim.
Ask before another jeweler works on the item
Resizing, soldering, replacing a stone, refinishing, rhodium plating, engraving, or changing a setting alters the piece. Before authorizing the work, contact the company responsible for the warranty or service plan. Ask whether outside work is permitted and request the answer in writing when possible.

Ring sizing can affect coverage and structure
Not every ring can be resized in the same way. Eternity bands, intricate settings, mixed metals, and large size changes may require special planning. Ask whether sizing is covered, whether there is a limit on the number of adjustments, and whether the work must be completed by a specific provider.

Check watch terms before a battery change
Opening a watch case may be restricted by a manufacturer’s warranty or service agreement. Some watches also require specific procedures, gaskets, tools, or water-resistance testing after the case is opened. Before replacing the battery, confirm whether the watch must be serviced by an authorized location and what testing is required afterward.
Keep a complete jewelry record
- Original sales receipt
- Warranty or service-plan terms
- Diamond or gemstone grading reports
- Current insurance appraisal
- Inspection and repair receipts
- Clear photographs of the item
- Serial numbers or identifying details, when applicable
An updated jewelry appraisal can help document the item for insurance purposes, but coverage decisions belong to the insurer and depend on the policy.
