Diamond clarity describes internal and surface characteristics that a trained grader evaluates under controlled conditions. Most diamonds have some of these features. The clarity grade reflects their size, number, position, nature, and relief—not simply whether a diamond has a visible “flaw.”
Inclusions and blemishes
Inclusions are internal characteristics or features that extend into the diamond. Examples include crystals, feathers, needles, pinpoints, and clouds. Blemishes are confined to the surface and can include scratches, abrasions, polish lines, naturals, and extra facets.
The same type of characteristic can affect two diamonds differently. A small inclusion near the edge may be less noticeable than a dark crystal beneath the table, while a surface-reaching feather in a vulnerable location may deserve closer review for durability.
The GIA clarity scale
- FL — Flawless: No inclusions or blemishes visible to a skilled grader at 10× magnification.
- IF — Internally Flawless: No inclusions visible at 10×, with only blemishes present.
- VVS1 and VVS2 — Very, Very Slightly Included: Minute inclusions that are difficult for a skilled grader to see at 10×.
- VS1 and VS2 — Very Slightly Included: Minor inclusions that range from difficult to somewhat easy to see at 10×.
- SI1 and SI2 — Slightly Included: Noticeable inclusions that are easy or very easy to see at 10×.
- I1, I2, and I3 — Included: Obvious inclusions that may affect transparency, appearance, or durability.
Does “eye-clean” mean a clarity grade?
No. “Eye-clean” is an informal description for a diamond whose inclusions are not readily visible without magnification under a particular viewing distance and lighting. It is not an official GIA grade, and the result can vary with diamond size, shape, inclusion location, and the viewer’s eyesight.
How clarity affects appearance and value
Higher clarity grades are rarer and generally cost more when other qualities are equal. However, a higher grade does not automatically make a diamond more beautiful to every buyer. Many VS and SI diamonds can look clean without magnification, while some inclusions may influence transparency or durability. Cut quality, color, carat weight, diamond shape, and personal preference must also be considered.
What to check before buying
- View the diamond without magnification in more than one lighting condition.
- Review the grading report’s clarity plot and comments.
- Ask where the grade-setting inclusions are located and whether they affect durability or transparency.
- Compare the clarity grade with the diamond’s cut, size, shape, and price rather than judging it alone.
