The name of the issuing laboratory matters because grading practices and consistency can differ.
The same printed grade may not mean the same thing
Two reports can list the same color and clarity while the diamonds look different in person. Laboratories may apply grading standards with different levels of consistency, and the report does not replace examining the actual diamond. When comparing prices, confirm that you are comparing diamonds graded by laboratories with comparable standards.
What to check on a diamond report
- Issuing laboratory and report number
- Shape, measurements, and carat weight
- Color, clarity, and cut information when applicable
- Polish, symmetry, and fluorescence
- Comments, clarity characteristics, and treatment disclosures
- Laser inscription, if present
Verify the report
Use the issuing laboratory’s report-verification service when available. Confirm that the report number and listed details match the diamond being offered. A grading report is not an appraisal, a guarantee of value, or a substitute for buying from a seller who will explain the stone and answer questions.
