A GIA diamond grading report describes a loose diamond’s measurable characteristics and quality grades. Knowing how to read each section helps you compare diamonds more accurately and confirm that the report matches the stone you are considering.
1. Report number and report date
The report number identifies the document in GIA’s records. Many diamonds also have this number laser-inscribed on the girdle. The report date tells you when the diamond was examined; it is not the date the diamond was mined or purchased.
2. Shape, cutting style, and measurements
This section identifies the diamond’s outline and facet arrangement, such as round brilliant, oval brilliant, or emerald cut. Measurements show the stone’s dimensions in millimeters. Two diamonds with the same carat weight can appear different in size because their proportions and shapes differ.
3. The 4Cs
- Carat weight: the diamond’s weight, not its face-up size.
- Color grade: the amount of visible body color using GIA’s D-to-Z scale for diamonds in the normal color range.
- Clarity grade: an assessment of internal inclusions and external blemishes under controlled examination.
- Cut grade: an evaluation of brightness, fire, scintillation, proportions, and finish for eligible round brilliant diamonds.

4. Polish, symmetry, and fluorescence
Polish describes the condition of the facet surfaces. Symmetry describes how precisely the facets align. Fluorescence records the strength and color of the diamond’s reaction to long-wave ultraviolet light. These details should be considered with the diamond’s appearance rather than judged in isolation.
5. Proportions, clarity plot, and comments
The proportions diagram records measurements such as table size, depth, crown angle, and pavilion angle when applicable. Some reports include a plot showing the approximate type and location of clarity characteristics. The comments section may note features that are not shown elsewhere, so it should not be skipped.
Confirm that the report matches the diamond
Check the report number through GIA’s official Report Check service and compare any girdle inscription with the document. A qualified jeweler can also confirm that the measurements and characteristics are consistent with the stone. Remember that a grading report is not a sales receipt, warranty, or insurance appraisal.
