“Special order,” “custom order,” and “custom design” are often used interchangeably, but they can describe very different levels of work. Before agreeing to an added charge, ask what is changing, who is making the ring, what approvals you will receive, and what the quoted price includes.
Special order
A special order usually starts with an existing design. The jeweler may order a different ring size, metal, stone option, or configuration from a manufacturer. Because policies vary by supplier and jeweler, ask whether the piece is already available, will be newly manufactured, or can be safely sized from existing inventory.
- What exactly is different from the display model?
- Is the ring coming from a supplier or being made in-house?
- Does the order change the return, exchange, or cancellation policy?
- What additional charge applies, and what does it cover?
Custom order
A custom order may modify an existing design beyond its standard options. Examples include changing proportions, substituting a different center-stone shape, adjusting the band, adding a matching ring, or using customer-supplied stones. The amount of design and manufacturing work determines the price and schedule.
Custom design
A custom design begins with your ideas rather than a finished catalog model. You might bring a sketch, photographs, several design references, or family jewelry that you want to rework. The jeweler develops a design around the chosen stones, metal, dimensions, wear needs, and budget.
The process may include a CAD model or another design preview, revisions, approval, manufacturing, stone setting, finishing, and inspection. Ask what type of preview you will receive and when the design becomes final. A detailed quote should explain the materials and work included.
