Custom Order, Custom Design, Special Order When Should You Pay More?

You will generally pay more for a custom order or a custom-designed ring, but ordering a ring in your size from a jewelry store should usually come with only a reasonable fee. The confusion often comes from the term “special order.” Some jewelry stores use this label simply because they need to order the ring in your size, which can create the impression that the ring is more complex—or more exclusive—than it actually is. In some cases, this can lead to unnecessary extra charges.

In this post, we’ll explain the differences between special order, custom order, and custom design, and how we use these terms at N.J. Diamonds. This isn’t to suggest that other jewelry stores are doing anything wrong—we simply believe that informed customers make better decisions and should understand exactly what they’re paying for.

What Does “Special Order” Really Mean?

You should always be aware of why you’re being charged extra for a special order and how much more you’re paying compared to buying a ring already in stock. Some stores treat a special order as something elaborate when, in reality, it may involve nothing more than a phone call or online order to a vendor.

If a store tells you your ring must be special-ordered because of your ring size, ask why. Is your size only one size larger or smaller than the original? If so, ask why the ring can’t simply be sized. Most jewelry stores offer ring sizing and send rings out to trusted professionals for this service.

It’s also reasonable to ask:

Is the ring being ordered directly from a vendor or supplier?
Is the ring being newly made, or is it an existing design in a different size?
Is the supplier charging an additional fee, and how much is it?

If the ring is being created from a wax model or a CAD (computer-aided design) file, then it is truly a custom order. In that case, you should be able to see a wax rendering or CAD image of your ring. If a store cannot provide this, there’s a good chance the ring isn’t actually being custom-made.

Some stores apply a “special order” fee simply for ordering a ring in your size. This fee may be a few hundred dollars—or, in some cases, thousands. In our experience, pricing often reflects what the market will bear. Asking questions helps ensure you’re paying a fair and transparent price.

A wax model or CAD design is created, a mold is made, and the ring is cast. Accent diamonds are hand-selected from hundreds of stones to match the color and clarity of the center diamond. Because of the time, craftsmanship, and attention to detail involved, custom-designed rings do cost more.

How We Use These Terms at N.J. Diamonds

At N.J. Diamonds, we use special orders, custom orders, and custom designs carefully and transparently.

If we need to order a ring because it cannot be sized in-store due to extreme size differences, we simply call it an order, not a special order.
If a vendor must make the ring specifically for you, it is a special order, and any additional cost reflects the supplier’s charges to us.
If you are designing the ring from scratch or significantly altering an existing design, it is a custom design.
